A reference, or a references point, is the intensional use of one thing, a point of reference or reference state, to indicate something else. When reference is intended, what the reference points to is called the referent. General ExamplesSome general examples are:
References are indicated by sounds (like onomatopoeia), pictures (like roadsigns), text (like bibliographies), indexes (by number) and objects (a wedding ring); but endless concrete and abstract methods can be used intentionally. This includes methods that intentionally hide the reference from some observers, as in cryptography. The following sections give specific usages of reference in different subjects. Academics and scholarshipIn academics and scholarship, an author-title-date information in bibliographies and footnotes, specifying complete works of other people. Copying of material by another author without proper citation or without required permissions is plagiarism. Keeping a diary allows an individual to use references for personal organization, whether or not anyone else understands the systems of reference used. However, scholars have studied methods of reference because of their key role in communication and co-operation between different people, and also because of misunderstandings that can arise. Modern academic study of reference has been developing since the 19th Century. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How to reference a point already within parentheses? Q. In other words im making a point that required a small bit of detail in parentheses after it but i need to reference/cite that small point also and im not sure how to do that. Does it require another set of brackets within brackets? I am asking a question(on yahoo answers(reference)) or is there a better way to do it? I think we're using the Harvard system? Asked by Yossarian - Sun Nov 22 15:13:07 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I've never heard of the Harvard system, and I'm a college librarian who teaches Information Literacy courses. Honestly, I would find a way to eliminate the parenthesis for the "small bit of detail." Just do it as a sentence, or put it after a dash, anything. Then put your citation after that. But, any good citation guide would tell you how to deal with this. Again, I have no idea what the Harvard system is. If you can get hold of a Chicago Manual of Style, however, I almost always find what I'm looking for in there. They may cover a situation like this. Can you use a reference if they have moved companies? Are you suppose to keep in contact with all of them? Asked by Christine L - Fri Aug 17 15:35:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS verify that your references are still valid and have valid contact info (and that way they know to expect calls as well!) Always! =) And yes, you can use them as a reference if they've changed companies - you just need to list what your relationship was... and make sure that person is still willing to be a reference. Q. I'm trying to figure out what the reference points are for lane position 1-4 and I haven't been able to figure it out. I also need to know how far away from the curb/center line the car is from each lane position. Asked by doulbek - Sun Sep 23 18:36:29 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A standard traffic lane is 11 or 12 feet wide. Some states have full 12 foot shoulders. Others have 8 foot shoulder or a partial shoulder which is 4 foot paved width and the rest grass or gravel. As for reference points, there is not a set beginning other than what is specified in engineering documents.
