From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A business (also called a firm or an enterprise) is a legally recognized organization designed to provide goods and/or services to consumers. Businesses are predominant in capitalist economies, most being privately owned and formed to earn profit that will increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of a financial return in exchange for work and acceptance of risk. Notable exceptions include cooperative businesses and state-owned enterprises. Socialist systems involve either government agencies, public, or worker ownership of most sizable businesses. The etymology of "business" relates to the state of being busy either as an individual or society as a whole, doing commercially viable and profitable work. The term "business" has at least three usages, depending on the scope — the singular usage (above) to mean a particular company or corporation, the generalized usage to refer to a particular market sector, such as "the music business" and compound forms such as agribusiness, or the broadest meaning to include all activity by the community of suppliers of goods and services. However, the exact definition of business, like much else in the philosophy of business, is a matter of debate. Business Studies, the study of the management of individuals to maintain collective productivity to accomplish particular creative and productive goals (usually to generate profit), is taught as an academic subject in many schools. Answered by Jane M - Thu Oct 16 15:53:51 2008 I've been filing a business write-off on my personal taxes. How do I close out the business on my tax return? Q. I am a writer who has filed business write-offs on my personal tax return for 5 years as per the law. I have not made profits in those years. I have been advised by my accountant that tax regulations do not favor my continuing to file business write-off because I have not made a profit so should close out the writing business. How do I go about filing my taxes now? Do I just ignore the past years write offs as thought they were never deductions? Asked by sullivan_vl - Sat Apr 7 08:17:06 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. As the other poster mentioned, if you have any income from writing, it will need to be reported, regardless of your write offs. Even if you just report the writing income this year without deducting any related expenses, there's a fairly good chance that you're going to be audited for one of the prior years. You're going to need to prove that you had profit motive for operating this business. Truthfully, I think you're going to have a really hard time proving that your writing was a real business and not a hobby, but that discussion is best left to you and your accountant. Q. What's the difference and which is better? If I have a bachelor's degree in business administration, is it better than a bachelor's degree in accounting? Also, if I have a bachelor's degree in business administration, what jobs am I open up to, and will it help me score a job as an accountant? If I have a degree in accounting only, what options for jobs do I have other than an accountant? Asked by FartingIsFun.Temp - Wed Jul 22 23:49:20 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. A degree in business gives you many more opportunities than one in accounting. However, if you want to be an accountant, majoring in accounting is best, though you can also become an accountant if you take enough accounting classes as part of your business degree. As an accountant, you might work your way up to comptroller or treasurer.
