Television (TV) is a widely used telecommunication medium for transmitting and receiving moving images, either monochromatic ("black and white") or color, usually accompanied by sound. "Television" may also refer specifically to a television set, television programming or television transmission. The word is derived from mixed Latin and Greek roots, meaning "far sight": Greek tele (τῆλε), far, and Latin visio, sight (from video, vis- to see, or to view in the first person). Commercially available since the late 1930s, the television set has become a common communications receiver in homes, businesses and institutions, particularly as a source of entertainment and news. Since the 1970s the availability of video cassettes, laserdiscs, DVDs and now Blu-ray discs, have resulted in the television set frequently being used for viewing recorded as well as broadcast material. Although other forms such as closed-circuit television are in use, the most common usage of the medium is for broadcast television, which was modeled on the existing radio broadcasting systems developed in the 1920s, and uses high-powered radio-frequency transmitters to broadcast the television signal to individual TV receivers. Broadcast TV is typically disseminated via radio transmissions on designated channels in the 54-890 megahertz frequency band. Signals are now often transmitted with stereo and/or surround sound in many countries. Until the 2000s broadcast TV programs were generally recorded and transmitted as an analog signal, but in recent years public and commercial broadcasters have been progressively introducing digital television broadcasting technology. A standard television set comprises multiple internal electronic circuits, including those for receiving and decoding broadcast signals. A visual display device which lacks a tuner is properly called a monitor, rather than a television. A television system may use different technical standards such as digital television (DTV) and high-definition television (HDTV). Television systems are also used for surveillance, industrial process control, and guiding of weapons, in places where direct observation is difficult or dangerous. Amateur television (HAM TV or ATV) is also used for experimentation, pleasure and public service events by amateur radio operators. HAM TV stations were on the air in many cities before commercial TV stations came on the air. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do you become a television producer? Q. I was wondering how does someone become a television producer? What kind of education do you need? Experience? Specifically, if you want to work for major networks like CBS, ABC or NBC and handle their primetime or daytime division or start your own production company. What advice would you give to help someone accumulate the proper experience and skills? And prime themselves for a career in television production? Thank you in advance. Asked by Jules4 - Tue Mar 10 20:43:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Two words - work experience! There are no formal qualifications for being a TV Producer, and it's not an easy ride to get there... you can't take a degree in it and expect to get a job straight away, it takes many mane years of hard work. It is useful to learn about the media - read magazines and broadcasting and keep up to date with what is being commisioned and broadcast, what is popular etc. When you apply for your first jobs they will be entry level, intern type jobs - office assistant, runner - that type of thing. and then you just have to learn - shadow people, ask for work experience with people you admire and gradually work your way up. you'll be a researcher for a long time, then an associate producer and finally, if you're… [cont.] Answered by emmanorrey - Tue Mar 17 17:29:43 2009 What is the most watched television event in history? Q. I'm not talking about television shows like the final episode of MASH, but events like Live Aid. We also forget about things like the moon landing. Which of all these major televised events was the most watched in history? Asked by bradwelljackson - Wed Aug 27 04:53:23 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Princess Diana's funeral was a big contender. Wiki says: There are no exact figures available for global television events. However, a report by IPG media agency Initiative Worldwide stated that the 2006 FIFA World Cup was the most-watched sporting event of that year with an average 1.2 billion viewers per match [31]. Such statistics have, however, proved controversial, failing to stand up to scrutiny [32], and audience figures cited in billions are practically unverifiable. It is popularly believed that the British TV show Top Gear is one of the most watched shows around the world. It is broadcast in 117 countries and is purportedly watched by up to one billion people.[33] The funeral of Princess Diana was watched by an estimated 2.5 [cont.] Answered by Beetroot Yourself - Wed Aug 27 04:56:57 2008 Is it rude to turn on the television during a conversation?
Q. My relatives are always watching television. When we go to their house it seems like the television is always on. If we are in a conversation if they are bored with what we are talking about the attention will go towards what is on television instead of what is being spoken about. Don't you feel the television is used to mute conversation? How about at your house? Asked by Jane W - Thu Jan 1 17:12:15 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. I personally think it is very rude to use television to ignore a conversation. If you are bored in a conversation, you either leave or try to liven it up in my humble opinion. Lets put it this way...if you were on a date with someone and they were bored with what you were talking about (or vice versa), who here could honestly say they'd just start looking away, stop talking and focus on someone else? I dare suggest very few - and it'd be blantantly rude. So...people who use TV as a distraction or convenient means to mute conversation I think are being somewhat offensive. I know some households where TV seems to be on all the time. Not mine by any means but I know some. I prefer to be away from the room with the TV to talk if others… [cont.] Answered by Bert from Oz - Thu Jan 1 22:04:27 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Television" Quotes regarding Television This theme article needs cleanup.
